Biotechnology Education and Career Pathways Interdisciplinary Curriculum, Sectoral Applications, and Emerging Opportunities in the Global and Indian Bioeconomy

Abstract

The advent of biotechnology courses a few decades ago appeared to provide a promising alternative pathway for young students exploring career options in science and applied technology. Biotechnology today spans agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, industrial production, and environmental management making it one of the most application-rich domains in modern science. Unlike traditional single-discipline degrees, biotechnology is inherently interdisciplinary, combining biology with chemistry, engineering, data science, and computational methods. Alongside technical laboratory competencies, the field is now expanding into emerging areas such as bioinformatics, synthetic biology, and biomanufacturing, which are generating diverse job opportunities across research, industry, regulation, and entrepreneurship. This paper synthesizes secondary evidence on (i) why biotechnology education is structured as an interdisciplinary program, (ii) How sectoral applications translate into workforce demand, (iii) The impact of policy and market trends particularly in India on opportunities, and (iv) The skills and training recommendations that improve employability for biotechnology graduates.
